The first calls for boundaries. The second calls for adjusting the environment and, where possible, the schedule. Treating a teenager like an early-rising toddler produces conflict and no improvement.

How ok-to-wake clocks work

An ok-to-wake clock solves a specific problem: a young child cannot read a clock, so telling them "not before seven" is meaningless. The clock converts time into a signal they can interpret without any numeracy at all — typically a colour change, sometimes a change of facial expression.

Red or blue means it is still night: stay in bed, or at least stay in your room. Green or a smiling face means the day has started and you may come and find us.

Toddlers and preschoolers

Most children can understand a colour cue somewhere around two and a half to three, though it varies. If a child is still in a cot and cannot get out, the clock is not needed yet.

What makes the difference in how you introduce it:

  1. Set it to their current wake time firstThe most common mistake is setting it to the time you would like. If they currently wake at 5:45, set green for 5:45 so the clock is right on day one and they experience it working. Then move it later in ten-minute steps every few days.

School-age children

Somewhere between five and seven, most children can begin taking responsibility for their own waking, and it is worth handing over deliberately rather than waiting for it to happen.

Give them their own alarm clock — an actual clock, not a phone. It is a real transfer of responsibility and children generally take it seriously. A simple analogue or large-digit digital clock also doubles as a way of learning to tell the time.

Keep the phone out of it for as long as you can. A phone in a child's bedroom is a light source, a social channel and an infinite distraction, and it is the single most common reason a school-age child's bedtime slips later.

During puberty, the timing of melatonin release shifts substantially later — commonly by one to three hours. A teenager who cannot fall asleep at 10pm frequently cannot, in a fairly literal sense: their body is not producing the signal yet. And because they still need eight to ten hours, a biological sleep onset around midnight and a 6:45am alarm produces chronic sleep restriction that no amount of encouragement fixes.

Worth internalising

A teenager who cannot get up at 7am is usually not making a choice. They are being asked to wake near their circadian low on insufficient sleep. The conflict this causes in households is largely avoidable once everyone understands that.

What actually helps a teenager

You cannot remove the delay, but you can avoid making it worse — and a lot of ordinary household habits make it considerably worse.

  • Bright light immediately on waking. Curtains open, lights on, ideally outside for a few minutes. Morning light is the strongest available signal to pull the clock earlier.
  • Dim evenings. Bright overhead light and screens after dark push the delay further out. Lamps rather than ceiling lights in the last hour or two helps more than people assume.
  • Phone charging outside the bedroom. The single highest-impact change, and the one most likely to cause an argument. Worth having the argument.
  • Protect the weekend within reason. Waking at noon on Saturday shifts the clock later and makes Monday considerably worse. Within two hours of the weekday time is a realistic compromise; demanding identical times is not.

And be realistic about the alarm itself. A teenager who is genuinely sleep-deprived will switch off anything within reach without waking. The goal at every age is a morning that does not require you to drive it. Children follow sequences much better than they follow instructions, so build the sequence.

What makes a sequence hold: the same order every day; each step visible or physical rather than remembered; everything that can be decided the night before decided the night before; and one instruction at a time rather than a list. "Get dressed" works. "Get dressed, brush your teeth, and find your reading book" does not, for most children under about ten.

A simple picture chart on the wall for younger children outperforms verbal reminders by a wide margin, and it has the same advantage as the ok-to-wake clock — it moves the authority from you to an object, which removes the argument.

When it is not a routine problem

Some signs are worth raising with a GP or paediatrician rather than solving with a better clock:

  • Snoring, mouth breathing, or pauses in breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnoea in children is under-recognised and often presents as behavioural problems or difficulty waking rather than obvious sleepiness.
  • Persistent difficulty waking despite genuinely adequate sleep over weeks.
  • Falling asleep during the day at an age where naps have stopped.
  • A significant change in sleep alongside a change in mood, appetite or behaviour.
  • Very frequent night waking, sleepwalking or night terrors that are disrupting the household.
